Introduction to Handbuilding
Class Information
Explore the basics of handbuilding and create your own imaginative clay piece in this introduction to handbuilding class. In two hours you’ll get a taster of key techniques including pinching and coiling, alongside ways to decorate your work using texture, carving, mark-making and coloured slip. During the session, you’ll experiment with form and surface decoration, getting a feel for clay, understanding how it behaves and enjoying the creative process. Suitable for complete beginners or those looking for a refresher.
All materials are included in the class fee, if would like your pieces finished for you we charge a small additional fee of £5 per item for glazing and two firings, plus £5 postage if needed which can be paid for in the cafe after the class. Your pieces will be ready for collection or postage eight weeks after the class.
We supply aprons but please wear clothing that you don't mind getting dirty! This class is suitable for ages 14+ and for a maximum of six people, we will let you know with as much notice in advance of any changes to the date or time of this class. Please note that the last 10 minutes of this class will be for the tidy-up of your workstation.
If you wish to buy this for someone else you can either notify us via email after purchase or otherwise you can purchase a digital gift card which can be used online to book any event, workshop, skate pass or purchase from the online shop.
Cancellations
You have 14 days from booking this class in which to cancel and receive a full refund or re-schedule, if you have booked last minute and there are less than 14 days before the date of the class no refund of exchange will be offered, but you can transfer the booking to a person of your choice to take your place.
Participants must be in a sound physical condition and able to sit or stand at a workbench. By booking, you confirm that you are fit to take part.

Brogan King
We’re pleased to welcome Brogan to the studio! Brogan’s ceramics journey began back in 2019 at London studio SkandiHus, and she’s been part of that creative community ever since. Before discovering clay, she spent years teaching Art and Photography in London and the Caribbean. Pottery started as a way to find balance, a mindful escape alongside a demanding teaching career.
Brogan recently moved to the South Hams and and will now be teaching our evening course, she’s passionate about making ceramics accessible to everyone, creating an easy going, welcoming environment where people can slow down, get their hands dirty, and rediscover the joy of making.
A skilled maker and natural teacher, Brogan brings warmth, humour, and encouragement to every session, always championing the beauty of imperfection and the simple pleasure of creating something by hand.
