Lael Neale
WHATS ON
Lael Neale brings her other world to Outside this August stopping off en-route to Green Man Festival!
Drawing from the Transcendentalists, primitive American gospel, and inspiration that runs from Dionne Warwick to John Lennon, Lael Neale’s music sits somewhere between drone pop, folk, and something more otherworldly. Her latest record, Altogether Stranger marks her third collaboration with Guy Blakeslee, it is her most expansive yet, a 9-song, 32-minute collection written in the early morning stillness of Los Angeles alongside an accompanying film - created with Neale’s faithful Sony Handycam.
Lael Neale has a rare ability to uncover the extraordinary within the mundane, tackling themes of polarity that recur throughout her work, country vs. city, humanity vs. technology, isolation vs. society.. Reflecting on her lo-fi, D.I.Y. ethos in her substack Consensual Sound, she writes, “I love doing things the wrong way. It’s so rare that we get to do that in life. Even as artists, I notice a slow and steady conformity set in as musicians become legitimate. I do it too. How else would we fit into the font, size & waveform of streaming services. I rebel in minute ways - like refusing to follow a recipe. In the end, I’m just like everyone else: I want to belong.”
Since her Sub Pop debut Acquainted With Night recorded on a cassette 4-track and released into the strange stillness of lockdown through to her follow-up Star Eaters Delight (2023) featuring 'I Am The River' , Neale has steadily built a devoted following. Her touring has taken her across the world, including sold-out shows in Los Angeles, New York, London and Paris, and a run supporting kindred spirit Weyes Blood.
Suspended between worlds, Lael Neale makes songs that feel both deeply human and slightly alien.
This will be a special one. We can’t wait. See you there!
